House Staff

Job Opportunity

The House Staff will be the first person with whom residents, guests, suppliers, volunteers, and others have contact when coming into the building. House team members provide a welcoming and supportive environment for the New Community Shelter residents to call home. The House Staff will be responsible for maintaining the safety and security of the residents and facility during the day, evening, and overnight hours; assessing potential new residents and assisting current residents in their day-to-day activities; collaborating with peers in the oversight of the entire facility, including residents, visitors, community members, and their activities.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Communicate with residents with empathy and compassion while maintaining professional boundaries, authority, and confidentiality.
  • Conduct rounds, security checks, and perform searches as needed. Immediately reports abnormal findings to the Director of Resident Care.
  • Handle front desk duties, including answering incoming phone calls, enrolling new residents in the shelter data system, enforcing policies, following proper procedures, and utilizing appropriate security measures (such as resident sign-in procedures, breathalyzer, fire log sign-in, temperature screening, etc.)
  • Work with a wide spectrum of individual issues, including but not limited to: AODA concerns, mental health concerns, and physical/cognitive disabilities.
  • Assist residents in meeting their daily needs for shelter, food, living necessities, and access to showers and laundry facilities.
  • Assess the need for crisis intervention while providing effective emergency service referrals as necessary.
  • Conduct intake process with new residents, including determining eligibility according to established guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate and complete written documentation for all individuals served, including significant events, concerns, unusual activities, and HMIS data.
  • Ensure the security of the facility and residents by following the established safety procedures, enforcing house rules, conducting room checks regularly, and monitoring the security camera system.
  • Inform appropriate personnel of problems with the operation of any plumbing, latrine, heating, and electrical systems to ensure the site remains safe and operational.
  • Ensure facility cleanliness through monitoring resident chores, daily building walk-throughs, and general housekeeping duties.
  • Accept and process donations, provide donors with receipts and thank you letters.
  • Attend staff and committee meetings as necessary.

  • Other duties may be assigned by the Director of Resident Care, and/or the CEO.

REQUIREMENTS
•    Education: High School Diploma (or GED)
•    Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, residents, and other employees of the organization.
•    Proficiency in using a computer for completing documentation, data entry, etc.
•    Applicant must demonstrate the necessary attitudes, knowledge, and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in multi-cultural situations.
•    Ability to support and contribute to a creative, collaborative, and respectful environment that promotes teamwork.
•    Applicant must successfully pass required background checks before an offer of employment.
•    Applicant must have reliable transportation.
•    Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds and operate cleaning machinery.
